Shinagawa Water Distillery
Treat aroma as an ingredient.
Shinagawa Water Distillery in Tokyo makes aromatic waters that let you season a drink with botanical fragrance. A little kuromoji, aomoji or mizunara can change the aroma of soda or tonic without turning the recipe into a complicated cocktail. Follow each bottle’s serving instructions and compare the drink before and after adding it. The Japanese Tonic Syrup is a different ingredient: it brings sweetness and bitterness as well as aroma.

Kuromoji and aburachan, aromatic Japanese trees, contribute a woody fragrance. Try a small addition to soda and notice the aroma before tasting. A sweet-smelling note is different from sugar sweetness.
